I know this question is asked all the time. Right now I am using RedHat 7.1 but I am wondering if there might be a better distribution for a complete linux newbie?

Yes... I just answered one like this yesterday. You may want to do a search of this board to see what other discussions have covered this topic (upper right-hand corner) :).

In my humble opinion, Mandrake is easiest by far, and seems to install more often smoothly and easily for a newbie. I consider myself a newbie, and have tried redhat. It installed ok, but most newbies(even though they learn hehe) really jus wanna "try this thing out", and mandrake seems ta get ya to that point smoother :)

Lets try not to start another one of these 'what's the best distro' question again. Two a day should be the limit.

Please do as suggested and read some of the other 'Best Distro' thread in the General forum.

I think that I like Red Hat 7.1 better, but the games that come with Mandrake kick rear end.... :D

I just installed Mandrake for my sis, & it's not bad.....quite similar to Windows & real easy

I've tried Red hat 7.0/7.1 and Corel (oh my god no) and Caldera and Mandrake 8.0/8.1. I'm no expert but I like Mandrake 8.1. Although I've just bought suse 7.3 (i think I could be in trouble!)

Go for mandrake 8.1

I actually have found SuSE to be a very easy, but powerful distro. I admit that I have not worked with some of the "advanced" distros like Slackware or Debian, but of RedHat, Mandrake, and SuSE, I (by a small margin) prefer SuSE.

Also, if you buy the SuSE box set, you get these really cool stickers of a green something ( it could be a lizard, or it could be a green hairball with legs, either way it sure seems happy about SuSE Linux :D )
