so i am using minicom to dial up to an isp and it hooks up and i get this prompt asking (this is a university isp) which system i want to go on the library one (ursus) or the UNET one (UNET id the name of the server) what do i do now. i am posting this mainly because the silly dodos in in IT won't be in until monday and i am curious about this. and while you're giving me advice, how does pppd work, the book i have makes it sound as though i am embarking on the greatest journey this side of space exploration?
Hmm...I thought minicom was only for testing the modem. Didn't know you could actually connect with it. Don't really know abut the which server question. Try kppp, or the Gnome equivalent, or wvdial if you're console only. All you should need is a number to dial, a username, a password, and the Domain Name Servers to get online. (Something like 255.255.255.255 or something like that)
All pppd really does is connect you to the internet. (without all the needless eye candy you see from the Windows side of things)

yeah, my book has me connect with minicom (which i can) and then use pppd to connect to the internet, although i only get ASCII when i start pppd.
where do i enter the DNS IP, i've entered the nameserver line in etc/resolve.conf but...
would you mind walking me through the console connection (i have a thing for console since i wantt o get my 486 running on the net eventually) thanks.

Try them both, and see where they lead. Hers some links I found helpful.
Your basic ppp stuff at this (http://www.abest.com/~kai/pppd.linux.html) site, looks pretty good!
There is another one right here (http://is.rice.edu/~rickr/script/linuxchat.html)!

thanks, i'll read them, but i thought i would drop this note on my progress. using minicom i get a prompt from the university ISP and i can log into computers (for instance i have an account on a Sun cluster and i work in an office of Sparcs) but despite that when i run ifconfig i only have my loopback. anywho, thanks again for your help. :)
