Has anybody tried it yet. I want to upgrade from 7.2, but I wanted to hear somebody else's story before I made the big leap of faith. I posted this on another forum, but I guess it wasn't too popular of a subject. ;)

I'll be trying it tonight after work as soon as I can burn the iso's, I'll let you know how it goes.

That's it? Nobody? Well, maybe you can clear this up for me. I heard that there are now two beta's of "Traktopel". A beta #1 and a beta #2. Anybody know if this is true? And if so, which one is which going by the filenames if the iso's?

The Traktopel iso/s are labeled one and two. You need both for a full install. They are not two differnet betas.

I installed 7.2 a while back on my test partition. I installed 8.0 just the other day on that same partition. I have not used it enough to give a fully detailed review. I will say that I don't see a lot of difference between 7.2 and 8.0, at least on the surface.

Rod

Well, I read in a mandrake forum somewhere linked from linux-mandrake.com that there was a second beta, but they didn't really elaborate. There were supposedly severe problems with the first beta, but hopefully the ISO's I grabbed were of the second beta that they put out. :D

Hi,

I've installed Mandrake 8 and it's great.
Kde 2.1, kernel 2.4.2, everything is cool.
Ok, some bugs (like kOffice), but not much.
It's still the most recent linux distro you can download. :p

Ok, finally finished up getting this all installed. Set-up was slick as usual. However, I can't say I really like the results. It seems alot buggier at this point than 7.2 did, but what can you expect it is just the first beta. The new boot-up screen is pretty cool, and KDE 2.1 is pretty slick, but I think I am gonna reinstall 7.2 and wait for a further beta or the final release of 8.0. This just isn't quite where I want it to be yet. (Still better than windows though. hehehe)

I downloaded the newest betas from redhat (7.1?) and mandrake 8.0. mandrake seemed to be more bloated, and came with a bunch of junk. The redhat one was pretty cool. I'm using it currently. I really like it better... especially it's built in firewall script. right out of the install, i had a firewall that rejects all ports, except certain ones (ssh) that i told it to in the install...

i didn't find something like that in mandrake... although it wouldn't be hard to do

well, I couldn't even get the damn ISO's to burn cuz my SCSI cd-r is kind of goofy in Linux and my Windows ME installation freezes if I fart wrong. I'll have to wait until the full release comes out and just order a cd. :(

I tried it and so far 8.0 will not find my scsi card with my zip100/scanner/cdrom burner..
It also did not find my awe64 sound card but
"sndconfig" did and got the two sound bits but it did not go correctly because Istill cannot get it to do any system sounds...Note MDK7.2 did work correctly on all the above..
I guess thats what betas are for..
JP

I'm guessing that's because they are now using the 2.4 kernel.
