what i mean is, could i install, say, mandrake (which has no problem detecting my video card and monitor), copy the XF86Config file to a floppy or something, then install debian (which i fought with for 2 weeks trying to get X to work) and just replace the one configured by XF86Setup?

would this work (assuming it was the same version of X, same kernel version, etc.)

Yup. They use exactly the same system.
