Is there a thumbnail image previewer which will not only create a preview page, i.e. a contact sheet, and also save the thumbnails in a contact file. The only one that I know of is created using display command, but it takes a while to create the contact sheets and they are not saved. So I end up having to recreate the contact sheets every time.

There's a "gallery" application called "picfolio" that might do the trick. Its small, easy to use. Might not be quite what you want, but it does work well for the purpose.

If you're using KDE, Konqueror has--as a part of the kde-addons package--a 'tools' menu selection of 'Create image gallery (Ctrl+I)' that gives you what you're looking for. (see attached)

I use XNView (http://www.xnview.com/) the odd time I need contact sheets.

If you're using apache there's a PHP based program called gallery that will do that and whole alot more. Great for organizing digital photos and the like and then sharing them with friends/family.
