I just downloaded Mandrake 8.1 and am brand new to Linux (I will learn Linux if it kills me because I think Microsoft should be embarassed for charging $300 for XP Pro when Linux OS's are so cheap, or free). Anyway, I was wondering if I should update the kernel in Mandrake 8.1 to the latest 2.4.14 kernel (I think Mandrake 8.1 has the 2.4.8 kernel)?
Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thx

If you know that it is stable and are capable of installing it. I can't see the harm. A little more digging on this and other sites should give you all the ammo you need to make a decision.

There is a thread just down from here that discusses, sort of this, kernel. :)

If there is something specific you need in the latest kernel, then do indeed upgrade. If not, then wait until you are more comfortable with the os.
In the meantime, just start reading all the kernel compiling documentation you can find so you will be ready when the time comes.
