I have used up all my onboard ide and now I'm looking to and ide pci controller card. I was looking on newegg and they all have what oses they work with one them. What do you guys recommend? I have never had one before, but I would like one with two channels, the whole os thing is throwning me off. I didn't know they were os specific. Or am I way off track?

Two channels (four drives) is pretty much standard. Yes, os specific drivers are required, at least in order to enable udma modes. If you need the card to operate under an MS$ os be sure that it is listed in the specs. As far as linux goes, try to find out the chipset the ide card uses. Then we can probably find out if linux supports it. The good news is that linux support for these add on pci ide controllers is actually pretty good. Most of the commonly used chipsets work fine.

I'm using a siig manufactured hpt366/367 based card that works great. People seem to have exellent results with a number of Promise cards.
