I am a linux user and want to try other UNIXes, I have tried FreeBSD, NetBSD, Solaris, Countless Linux Distros... and even SkyOS. I wanted to try BeOS. So I downloaded the .zip file and opened it in ARK. I unzipped it to it's own directory. I burned both images (.cue, .iso)
Both of then were recognized as valid CD Images in k3b.
I burned them, and neither of them would boot on my laptop. Is there some trick to getting BeOS to boot?

Please let us know which "version" of the BeOS you've downloaded. The official trial version released by Be inc. required installation from within and booting from Windows. Since you stated there's a *.cue file I doubt this is the version with which you're dealing.
Then there's the BeOS Developer's Edition, BeOS Max Edition, and PhOS. The first two are based off of the official version released by Be, with patches and updated software included. I would guess that you've most likely downloaded either Max or the Developer's Edition. If that's the case, you may need to download a patch for your processor. I notice in your sig that you have an Athlon XP. These versions require a simple text file to be made prior to burning, depending on the version. Some need it, some have it included.
I'd suggest getting the newest release of BeOS Max from BeOS Max.org (http://www.beosmax.org) , or letting us know which one you have so that we can make some suggestions.
When you do finally get the BeOS to boot, be in for a suprisingly fun time! Even though it's based on an OS that hasn't been updated in ages, it puts the fun back into computing.
Another little tip: All BeOS bootable cds are live cds. When you boot it up and it gives you the choice as to which partition to install to, hit cntrl+alt+delete and choose to "restart the desktop" and play around with it before you install!

It is BeOS 5 personal edition max.
Does that sound right?

Depending on the version of Max, you may or may not need to make your own *.cue file.
which version is it and from where did you get it? Version 3 should be good to go

I wouldn't know, since I'm on dialup.
BeOS has some issues with some newer NICs and other network hardwre, but it's always worked well on my home LAN. I'd imagine you should have no problems. Internet and network connectivity were always much easier for me with BeOS than with Linux. If you do have an issue (with any hardware, really), visit BeBits (http://www.bebits.com) - this is THE source for BeOS software, drivers, etc.
