Hello all! I would like to download and install Suse 7.2 and the PPC version as well. However, I noticed that they do not have iso files, which I find easier to use, available only the folders/files. My question is how do I download and burn these folders/files in order to create a set of install cds? Having only used isos I am at a loss.

This is one of the crappy things about the distro....they don't make .iso files readily available for download. They have evaluation cd's but you can only run it from the cd like demoware :(

You have 2 options :

1) Purchase the cd's and receive books and several cd's full of apps for $39.99 US ??

2)Attempt to do an install via ftp. Alot of people have troubles getting it installed in this manner.

It kinda pisses me off that they are basically forcing you to purchase a full version (no try before you buy) but I guess they have to eat too :P

Thanks! Not knowing how to do the ftp install I may just have to skip it. I have seen it in the city (Winnipeg,Manitoba, Canada) but it is currently a little too expensive. If you can tell me how to go about an ftp install I may give it a stab. Thanks again for the quick reply! :D

Hi Sarah! I have SUSE as well I bought a version from Linuxcentral.com I think I paid like $3.0 US dollars for it. It's a working distro, but you don't get a lot of horns and whistles with it, or any documentation. but it was good enough for me to evaluate it. Hope that helps. Good luck :)

I installed 7.2 sometime ago...

The suse website has instructions on ftp install. below is what I can remember.

from ftp server, download floppy images (boot & modules disks) and use rawrite to put them on floppies.

boot with the bootdisk and choose the ftp install option. you'll be asked to insert the modules floppy and choose the driver for your network card.

enter the IP address of the suse ftp server. once it's connected you should be fine. on a cable modem it took me more than 5 hours to install!

Good luck

LOL Just finished a FTP SuSE 7.2 install. I shoulda known better but I chose the "install almost everything" option. The 1800+ packages took 14 hours to download/install on my DSL. I don't know if I need everything yet. From my first impressions of SuSE I have to say it's an excelent distro. YaST is certanly the best general linux configuration tool there is although I don't like YaST2 quite as much. SaX/SaX2 are simply the best XF86 config tools around.

Umm...er...Don't get me wrong. I still like my Debian but SuSE comes in at a tight 2nd. I would recomend SuSE for any newbie linux user. Pretty much everything is straightforward for a basic desktop. I haven't done any advanced configurations on it yet(Apache/PHP/MySQL, mail server, etc.) but for a newbie, the basic config will be a positive experience.

I plan on buying SuSE 7.3 Professional and believe it will be a great investment.

Thanks all. I might get the time to try this in a few weeks. Sounds like a big challenge. :)

I have been using SuSE 7.3 for about a week and a half now and I must say that I'm impressed. Really fast, stable, and 98% of packages worked out of the box (including KonCD). And the best part is that I can watch DVDs on it too using Ogle (which didn't work on SuSE 7.1 but does on 7.3). I think you'll be pleased with it.
