Okay, I've got a second linux box set up now... I'm going to set it up with Debian. What's the best way to get/install debian?
Get a new version on CD (or course)
Get an old version on CD at the half price computer book store for a couple bucks
Get it off the 'net?
I've got a DSL connection and the whole house LANed...
What's going to be the best way to go about this do you think?

well if u want it free, u can either dl the 3 iso's...
or u can dl the floppy images then apt-get the rest during the install.
if the store bought ones come with books and stuff it might be worth it.
i've just finished dl'ing the and burning the 3 iso's today, and i think im gonna wait till the weekend to start installing, cuz im a big newbie and it'll probably take me a long time to figure it out =P
Just for the record, you don't have to d/l all 3 iso's. The only iso you should need is binary-ARCH-1.iso (where ARCH is your system architecture, e.g. i386).
There are several ways to install debian:
obviously, buy the cd's
d/l an iso
use the pseudo-image kit to create an iso
grab the floppy images and ftp install
Personally I just grab debian/dists/stable/main/disks-i386 and burn that, make a rescue/root floppy set and install from that;once the base system is up, just apt-get the rest of the system.
Enjoy. ;)
All you have to get is about 23MB of base system & you can apt-get the rest, see booting from a hard disk (http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch-rescue-boot.en.html#s-install-drive) I had no probs doing this from DOS, & it can be done from a Linux partition.

So apt-get'ing the rest of the system is pretty easy to figure out eh?
I take it that it's not all that hard to get debian upgraded from an old version, using the apt-get?
So if I went and bought an older CD (with a book) then I should be able to get *everything* currents fairly easily?
Cool cool... :)
This'll be fun..

get debian upgraded from an old version, using the apt-get?
just use
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
I'm guessing you want unstable "woody", so just edit your sources.list in /etc/apt

Well I did it.. :P
I got the O'reilly "Learning DEBIAN GNU/LINUX" book, with the CD.. (for $10. :D)
The CD has Debian 2.1 on it, so I'll just apt-get whatever upgrades I need.. heh heh...
This'll be fun.. :)
