hello

im new to linux so dont respond saying how stupid i am. anyway, i was wondering how to get into windows x, Gnome, or the graphical thing anyway.

i have linux mandrake.

when i type startX it comes up with an error 2 anyway.

First off...you're not stupid...we all start off new at some point...and I am by NO means any sort of expert....but I'll try to help anyway...

1. Just so you know...it's "X windows"

2. What version of Mandrake are you running?

3. What EXACTLY is the error you are receiving when you try "startx".

Let's start with that for now...

linux mandrake I believe that it has a command called Xconfigure that you could run. Once you enter that command it will help you set up your video card. Try playing around with certain settings and see if they work for you.

I run rh7 so i'm not to sure about mandrake but all linux are almost the same.

Wasn't it XConfigurator? I dunno...seems like that rings a bell. Well if either of those fail, you can also try "XF86Setup", or if worst comes to worst, "xf86config" (you have to know a good deal about your hardware to use this one). However, giving us the exact errors would be best, as it could be something as trivial as a lockfile being in place.
