okie after reading the filesystem and multi partition NHF's and a sarch on this board i still have some questions

first i have 60gb to play with and linux will be my only os

this is what i have managed to cook up partition wise

swap 256mb

1gb of dead space for an attempt at an LFS in the furture

/ 1gb

/usr size:?

/usr/local size:?

/home size:?

/var size:?

/tmp size:?

the reason for the "?" is that i am not sure what the recomended sizes that those sections should be

secondly i was pointed to the fact for those must have apps that i am so used to can be ran with VMware

this being the case and the info i have heard
would vmware benefit from haveing its own partition for its files ?? if so what should that size be aswell.
im not sure if its a stupid question but if it isnt and the use that VMware will be put through is relavent then ill only be useing it to play a few games

the 1gb of free space before my / is for a from scratch system mentioned in the distro NHF it claims to teach you a ton about linux so i figured i would plan ahead

so once again
Thanx In Advance For All Your Help.

Remember what I said about not coming to me for help if you decide on Mandrake. ;)

Base your decision on the NHF. Just use the examples in the NHF and convert to 60GB.

As for VMWare, you had better take another look at www.vmware.com (http://www.vmware.com) as I don't believe you fully understand what it is and does. VMWare is a virtual machine which allows you to run one os inside another. One is the guest and the other the host.

NT/2000 or Linux can be the host and just about any os can be the guest. The guests filesystem looks like a regular filesystem to itself, but is a single large file within the host os.

Host os Linux
Guest os Win98

When you create the virtual machine for Win98 you allocate lets say 2GB. When Win98 is installed in the virtual machine, the Win98 filesystem looks the same as it normally would. In the host os (Linux) the Win98 virtual machine filesystem shows up as one 2GB file.

You can also use raw disks which allows you to boot the guest os from a actual Win98 installed partition.

VMWare has a lot of documentation at their site and they also have the entire online docs available as a pdf for downloading.

hehe MD

my scheme is some what based on the NHF

so lets say we double the size for /home /usr and /usr/local keep /var and /tmp at 250mb

resulting in this

swap 256mb

LFS 1gb (part of my planed learning experince)

/ 1gb

/usr 4gb
/usr/local 4gb
/home 4gb
/var 250mb
/tmp 250mb

ill have 45gb left to add to my own misc sections for say mp3s video capture storage etc or would i be better off just tossing all my space into the main system partitions

oh and thanx for the pointer i didnt have all the facts mainly hearsay

and hey MD mandrake was droped my 3 contenders are Caldera Slackware or Debian
ill be installing before sunup

MUHAHAHAHA nothing but free time to kill might as well do somthing productive heh

thanx for all of your help
