I've been looking for a reference manager for publications. I'm a student in a research lab, and we have a large number of references that we all need access to frequently. I was looking to set up a ncbi-style database locally, hosting just the papers that we have deemed interesting. It would be a great way to share the interesting articles we find. I envisioned a web server accessible to the lab where you can search for articles of interest, put up recent papers you find, etc.

I found RefDB and it looks pretty good. From what I can tell, it looks like it would do what I want (but then again, it may not). The only problem is, the manual is a total mystery to me. I tried reading it, I really did. I have the pdf open right here, but I cannot figure it out.

I got through the install, but now I'm totally stuck. I know very little about SQL databases, and I seem to be in over my head. It can't get it to start up. even though it compiled with no errors.

Is this the wrong tool for the job? Would anyone be willing to help me out? Are there any good HOWTOs out there? I have been unable to locate any on a Google search.
