I'm getting ready to setup a dual boot linux/win98lite box. I want to know what distribution will give my system the least headache in making everything work correctly. My primary concern is my CDR, and DVD. Also, does anyone know of any good multitrack recording programs on par with say, Sonicfoundry Vegas, or Cakewalk? Thank anyone for any help

System:
Abit bp6 w/udma 66
Celeron 300a @ 450
256 PC133 ram
128 PC100 ram
Maxtor 40G udma 66 7200rpm
Yamaha 16x EIDE CD/RW
Sony 8x EIDE DVD
ATI Rage Fury Pro VIVO
SBLive value
Dlink 100bit ethernet :)

Try a search at freshmeat.net for i.e. sequencer or notation or even cakewalk.

There are a few out there that are similar to Cakewalk though maybe not as powerful. Certainly not as expensive. ;)

midimountain is one and the other popular ones I just cannot remember the names. The search will find them.

Lots of posts in this forum on distro suggestions.

For concerns about the compatibility of specific hardware, it's best to check the Hardware Compatibility Lists which most Linux distributors post on their support sites. Each user's experience with a given piece of hardware may vary, but you'll definitely save yourself a lot of hassle if you verify that your particular gear has been tested with your distro. As for which distro that should be, the answer is very subjective. As LNG said, there are many threads in the archives which discuss (to put it lightly *cough*) the pros and cons of each distro.

I like Mandrake but I sure would not recommend it right now. 8.1 has not been very friendly to use. There are alot of little niggly problems if you can even get it installed. Mandrake is very user friendly and easy to install but 8.1's problems outweigh it friendliness.
