webshots is a site that has a huge collection of wallpapers , both commercial and user supplied. Great pics.

Well, isn't a wallpaper pretty much OS-independent? Or do you mean pro-linux like wallpapers? Penguin computing did some good pics (http://www.penguincomputing.com/community/desktops.php).
Other sites are digitalblasphemy (http://www.digitalblasphemy.com/dbhome.shtml), deviantart (http://www.deviantart.com), tigert also did some nice ones (http://tigert.gimp.org/wallpapers/) (I like the bluespace.jpg). And, of course, there is themes.org (http://www.themes.org/).

How about installing webshots on a windows system and moving the screens you like most to linux? Having the webshot gui would be nice though.

I once made a script that changed the background every 5 minutes. Don't know what I did with it, but I think it might still be on LNO somewhere (I posted it here).
