hi

i want to order dsl thru PacBell in the most cost efficient way. my roommate and i are willing to install it on our own. however, pacbell customer self-installation is not available for me if i have a linux operating system. and i really don't want to spend $200 for a dsl technician to install this. do you have any suggestions? and let me know if you have any advice about purchasing dsl equipment thru other vendors.

thanks,
christine

Tell them you have winders installed the do the setup yourself . There are many how tos on dsl and linux so this should not be problem. In other words LIE. -

As s1nn said, telling a little white lie won't hurt. But to make things as easy as posssible in this situation I would do the setup on a Windows puter first in order to accertain the info you will need to set it up in Linux ( your login name, password, DNS numbers, etc). If you have a spare box with windows on it fine - do it on that one first. If not, maybe you are doing a dual boot on your current sys? If so, boot into windows and set it up there. If not, maybe you have a spare drive lying about that you can install Windows on to do the ADSL setup.
Which ever way you do it, do make sure that the modem Pac Bell provides you with is an external, non-usb, type that requires an Ethernet card to operate.
I personally use Verizon as my ADSL provider and at installation time, they gave me a choice of three diferent modems, 1) Westell ADSL external with NIC, 2) Efficient Networks USB ADSL, or 3) Efficient Networks Internel ADSL, and I am assuming Pac Bell will give you a similar choice. Save yourself some grief and make sure you get the externel with NIC. Good luck. :)
