This weekend, I found that my favorite TV show ever is available for free viewing on demand, but it's only available in streaming windows media player format.

I've got mozilla and mplayer, and they play nice together. I've got the win32 codecs and usually all goes well, though I'd never tried viewing wmp stuff streaming before.

I am able to view the video, but get no audio. On my husband's win2k machine, I am able to get both audio and video.

I spent much of the weekend googling, scouring forums and mailing list archives, uninstalling mplayer and reinstalling from source, etc. I'm starting to wonder if it's more of a basic audio issue and less of a codec issue. Any clues or pointers are appreciated.

I'd love to hear if anyone out there has success in playing the show. Free registration is required, so I'll understand if anyone balks because of that. The show is called "The Mechanical Universe." Here's a link:

I'm at work but you may be able to correct the sound problem in mplayer's gui menu (gmplayer) in trhe audio setup. also, in your sound mixer make sure video sound is enabled and all the PCM's are unmuted.

Excellent suggestions. I wish it were that simple. Levels were the first thing I checked. Aumix is my friend. :)

I've also played around with many of the options presented by gmplayer. No difference. The answer may still lie in there somewhere, but I haven't found it yet.

The only sound I get from these particular streaming files is a nasty blip about a minute into play. Mplayer has never let me down before, and seems to be okay. I'm starting to doubt my audio setup in general.

Maybe I should think about getting a "real" sound card, instead of the (possibly formerly) adequate onboard sound. Of course, then I'd need a better computer to go with it... :) Mmmmm.... new computer.... *drool*

-Waylena, still trying to figure out if it's even possible to play the files in Linux.
