Ok, i installed the package rp-pppoe....(don't remember exactly) with Mandrake 8.0 so I can use it: adsl-setup, then adsl-start. It says it's connected but the system doesn't seem to agree with that. Netscape will look indefinitly for any adress, Konqueror too, ftp too,...

I can add to that that the connection was working previously (before I reinstalled linux from scratch), I had then indicated to the system during the installation right away that I used ADSL to connect to the Internet, wich I didn't do during the second installation. For that second installation, i made it a LAN connection, just to try...
:p
Anyway another question would be why HardDrake never includes my network card in it's hardware listing, but the system say's there is one: "$ ifconfig eth0" gives me the info... When I had Mandrake 7.2, I had a similar problem (was told it's the tulip driver)(the card is a LinkSys Etherfast 10/100)

Basically, what I'd like to know is if linux runs the net card "eth0" and runs the protocol "ppp0" and how you relate all that togheter...

As confusing is it might seem, any input on all I wrote would be very welcome
Thanx in advance

Check /etc/resolv.conf to see if your IPS's DNS IP's are correct. The form is:
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Usually two lines.

I tried that, plus I reinstalled rp-pppoe with the newest version.
I configured it and itruns (adsl-start ..Connected!)

But the system can't use the connection, Nescape and Konqueror don't get anything from internet adresses.

Any idea why it is like that?

thanx in advance

I can't really help you out on your actual problem, since my particular set-up is automaticaly done for me. I can, however, show you what your ifconfig should look like. Keep in mind, this box is a IPMASQ box and has two NIC's(eth0 is my internal network and eth1/ppp0 is connected to the DSL modem). If you only have a single NIC, eth1 will be your eth0.
There are two references to EtherTalk. One for eth0 and one for lo. You probably don't have EtherTalk and most likely don't need it. You only need EtherTalk if you have a MacOS based computer on your LAN.

I had the exact same problem with mandrake. First of all are sure your DSL connection connects using pppoe. If I remember correctly that is the first choice of four connection options in mandrake. Try using one of the other four options. When you select the right one it should automaticly deturmine your IP address. If it does not you may have to manualy enter your IP, Gateway etc...
