Hi a couple days ago I installed lnx4win on my comp...10GB HD, 128MB ram, PII 350MHz, WinMe

First I have no sound...I read on some other forum to run sndconfig but it said command not found(ima linux newbie) It beeps at me though when I push the wrong key(beep comes from speaker)

Second problem..can't access cd-rom drive. I am on as root, and no matter what CD I have in it says permission denied..I"ve remounted and stuff. There is a little picture of a lock over the folder when I go to /mnt

Any help would be great

Are you sure there's a CD inside the drive? That's the error I get if there's no CD, but when I put one in, it's all fine. What sound card (make & model) do you have?

KilerCris- I am a newbie to Linux also- just installed Linux-Mandrake 7.2 for about the 8th time. Get the same problem-access to /mnt/floppy & /mnt/cdrom folders is denied. I can mount thses devices thru a terminal window. Using KDE for the Desktop. Those folders have padlocks on them.Every time I try to create an icon on the desktop I get the access denied message.I've gotten a lot of responses on how to mount thru a terminal, changing permisions & changing /etc/fstab.As of yet have not figured out how to get those folders unlocked to get rid of that message. And yes to anyone who reads this I'm logged in as "root".If you get it figured out-feel free to e-mail me-thank's- Dave

G/day All
(there's a bug in MD 7.2)
It appears a lot of us have the same problem, if you go to -
"www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/tutorial"
then half way down that page under "cd recorder" if you follow that through it explains the problem
i tried their fix but it didn't work, i'm just about to give the cd's to the dog to play with and go back to redhat 7.0

Cris !

You might want to try Suse 7.1 or wait for Red Hat 7.1, they are both much better suited for beginners, especially Suse.

Also while I learned to respect mandrake fans I must say in my experience mandrake installations are far from Suse or Red Hat YET. Yes the GUI is there but hardware detection and other problems are present.

I'm not too much of a begginer. I have been using linux over telnet for awhile...
