Hi:

We have a Cobalt Qube3 for a mail server. Don't know sqwat about Linux, but thought we didn't need to since it's "an appliance".

Found a virus/gatway product that supports the Cobalt; downloaded a trial version; and have no idea how to install it. FWIW, the product is Trend Micro's Interscan VirusWall.

In doing a search of this forum I found one thread that was almost relevant. But not quite.

In my Windows (sorry) client I can see the contents of this tar file I downloaded. Looks to me like there are probably 2 different installs, depending on the Linux version in use (I think).

Not sure where to put the file (the Qube expects some type of package file) or what to do with it once it's there. Anyone have any suggestions, or warnings? The one relevant thread I found included a message saying don't put any RPMS on a Cobalt, but since I don't know what an RPMS is I don't know how to not do that ;-)

Thanks for any help. Any thus begins my journey as a newbie...

Well, you can put RPM packages on a cobalt just fine. RPM is for managing installed software, see www.rpm.org. (http://www.rpm.org.)

If you can find a .pkg for the cobalt, that is the easiest. An RPM of this software would be next. You seem to have just a tar file of it, which if it's in source code form, will be harder to install and remove.

You should get familiar with telnet'ing into the cobalt.

The Cobalt mailing lists are very helpful, and will probably be the second place you should always look for info, after the manual, of course.

Cobalts are nice little machines, just keep up to date on the security updates.
