I had a nightmare trying to install (and remove) Mandrake 7.2. For a Windows expert, Linux dumbass like me, is there a better version to install? And how much space will I need?

And when will Adobe and others release Linux versions of their software?

Most vendors seem to be waiting for gnome and kde to sort themselves out before issuing their next releases. As far as major software like adobe (depending on what software you need), most of them have either ported a version to linux, or there is already a linux version available from elsewhere that does as good (often better) a job. GIMP is a good example of this.

For the record, I understand the nightmare part about installing linux, but be persistant. The payoff is a lot more than a new OS to play with. Also, a lot of people had a hard time installing that version.

Mandrake just released the 8.0 release candidate...if all goes smoothly we'll see Mandy 8.0 in a few days. And yeah I understand about the tough install too. My first distro was RH 6.2, and even with a wizard install like that I managed to wipe my windows partition clean and have the entire system down for a weekend. I did have luck with mandy 7.2 though...although a lot of people didn't. You might try Mandy 8.0 once it's out, SuSE 7.1, and I hear the latest and greatest RedHat is very decent indeed (a call back to the days when they were a standard). Good luck.

Actually in a week or so, we'll see rc2 more likely. There have already been a couple of major bugs in rc1.

What do you mean "ported" software to Linux? I know that Gimp exists but it is inferior to Photoshop, and besides Photoshop is not the only major software product out there that Linux can not run yet (e.g. Flash 5 editor, Dreamweaver 4, Fireworks 4, MS Office, MS Publisher, etc).

Just that Linux, along with Apple, definitely has the minority in the world of home computing (yes even for power users) and I have seen very little hardware or software available for it in CompUSA. So it scares me.

I just got an evaluation of SuSE 7.1 and I'm going to take it for a spin after bad luck with Mandrake 7.2. Any experience? Can I set up a dual-boot? My drive D is bigger than Drive C...how do I install it to Drive D?
