The original screenshots thread was getting overly large and (a rough guess) probably 90% of the links to screenshots in it were dead. So, like most of the links it contained, the old screenshots thread is dead now.

I'm going to make this post sticky until we get a large enough number of posts to make it appear on the front page all the time like the old one.

So, this is the new screnshots thread.

See my screenshots on my web site (link in my sig).

NOTE: Please do not use the IMG tag in your posts. Please use the URL tag instead as this allows people who have slow connections to read this thread without having to wait for a ton of graphics to load. Then they can click on links to the ones that they want to look at.

This is a bit of a cheat.

http://www.jedimoose.org/blosxom/images/vncss.png

Foreground - PuTTY on Win2k running an SSH session to my home machine, and then starting a vncsession tunnelled over SSH.

Background - TightVNC picking up aforementioned tunnelled VNC connection and showing my basic Fluxbox, with a single xterm and Gkrellm running.

Hopefully I'll be able to post a nice new screenie from my new 2.6-based machine soon :)

I'll just take a rough guess. His window manager is Fluxbox as indicated in his post. In Fluxbox you can title the menu anything you want and being a loyal slackware user he title "Slackbox".

tuco There's "Computer" which is like "My Computer" from windows, only this is just a pure hardware aspect of it. Such as, for mine, there's Floppy, cdrom, cdrw, filesystem, and network. Network doesn't quite work for me, but the cd's will automagically mount if they can when you double click on them. I've heard the nautilus CD burner is better, but I never used it in 2.4 to notice a difference. Contrary to popular belief, the 'spacial' file manager (each location=new window) is less annoying then you think, and double middle clicking closes the parent window in the process. Oh, and nautilus crashes more in 2.5 :D

This was an amazing, lucky photo taken just before that F16 Thunderbird made a $20,000,000 smoking hole in the ground.

Edit: Also note that their was nothing wrong with the F16. It was pilot error. All the flame and smoke in the photo is from the ejection seat rocket.

I'm running KDE 3.1.

The taskbar is a karamba theme called New MacOSX Bar (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=6516) , downloaded from www.kde-look.org. The bar is white originaly, I just changed the pictures into half-transparent ones. The icons on the bottom bar (a modified version of transbar) are from several different themes and programs, mostly crystal I think.

My first attempt at screenshots. They're not great, but that's partially because they were intended to show off the program that I wrote, and not so much the desktop.

The terminal programs aterm or Eterm ought to do it for you. For information on getting them all transparent try a JL search for "Transparent terminals" or "Transparent aterm"... etc.

Yep, the only downside is i'm stuck to 16bpp since the second graphics card sucks and can't do 1024x768 @ 24 or 32. But I haven't noticed any ill effects from this. If you want, I'll send you my XF86Config file for reference.

I Need a Faster Server! (http://yeti.homelinux.net/recent.jpg)

The important information: I switched from Openbox to Fluxbox because of the bling-bling menus. We got an Eterm running with Folding@Home, we got another with a ssh connection to my web server and one just kind of hanging out. Gkrellm theme is called AlmostX as well as the fluxbox theme.

Simple, yet ugly.

No idea where I got that background...Google image search is all I can remember :)
OK, found it
http://www.linuxtrainers.biz/downloads/backgrounds/backgrounds.html

The transparent menues you need fluxbox 0.9.2 and RENDER support (Gentoo included this)
To set it you can go under the menu (fluxbox menu -> Configure -> Menu Alpha) and click it to where you want (255 is opaque and 0 is completely transparent, mine is 110)

or manually set it in the ~/.fluxbox/init by adding or editing the line
session.screen0.menuAlpha: <number>

I'm still going to tweak it for a while, then probably submit it to http://www.themedepot.org/

Dig around http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/ in the latest development release section and you can find a lot of not yet fully documented tips and tweaks and pointers for customizing fluxbox

It's just Nautilus. I was just trying to have something pulled up for the screenie, but all I did was go into a directory with all png files and "View as image collection" shows up in the drop down view option list to the top-right. I didn't know it was there until the other day either.

I can see this being true if you created the background yourself, but if you got it from somewhere, I don't see why not to share it? I guess you're too l33t for all of us.

hey no problem, I can understand if those are some that you have personally created. But if you didn't, what's the big deal? and if you did, good job, they look good.

I think it's great to see somebody who has created every single element on their screen.

Oooo the blue version looks nice! The cubes REALLY ruin it though. I modified the GTK2 theme to match better.. I'm going to upload another screenshot in a second.

UPDATE:
Updated Screenshot (refresh browsers) (http://members.cox.net/gamma/snapshot.png)
Showing of the GTK+2 Theme (http://members.cox.net/gamma/gtk.png)

Basically the GTK theme is called Futureice, which couldn't be released officially because it stole icons from bluecurve/apple themes, which I then modified to give it a flat look and match my openbox theme better.

From the FAQ
B.1. What is the Slit?

The first thing to know about the Slit is that it is not the Fluxbox taskbar.

The Slit is a place where dockable applications can 'dock'. We have an entire chapter devoted to the Slit: Chapter 7. Read it before asking any questions about what the slit is and how it works. And I found the dumb "system tray icon plugin"...found it once in the past and took me ages to find it again, I just wasn't thinking "plugin" :)

Still trying to figure out how to get it in the slit instead of the system tray in the toolbar...not very high priority for me though :p

I use the Beta version of Gimp2 and it really has some nice features including one to lets you merge windows into one big one. However I tend to have one big window to handle tools on one side and one big window to handle brushes and layers on the other side.

first off I do agree with JohnT that if u were so noob u would appreciate the abstractness of the gimp and its ways.

Also... your screen shot sucks dude... it seems like your more into showing off that u can do borderless translucent consoles seeing how you blocked almost half off your icons using them. Try again man...

I have to say, that is a very nice effect with the transpent terminal with the blue tinting...anyone know how this is done?

*hit's man page for Eterm*

Cool, found it
--tint mask
--tint color
Tints the background pixmap (either an image file or the transparent portion can be shaded). The mask is an integer, usually specified in hexadecimal in the form 0xRRGGBB, where RR, GG, and BB are hexadecimal numbers between 00 and ff (0 and 255 decimal) which represent the brightness of the image's red, green, and blue values, respectively. A value of 00 will mask that color out entirely, while a value of ff will not change that color at all.

You may also specify an X color such as grey75 or MidnightBlue or #babb7f instead of a mask. I've some testing to do later :)
