Is that still available? I thought that was a limited time offer, and by the time I read the offer, it was already closed.Originally posted at http://www.novell.com/community/linux/order.php At this time we are not accepting any more orders. Parcival 07-20-2004, 04:04 PM No, you can't get a SuSE Personal Edition with students' discount. SuSE's idea is to give away the Professional Edition for the price of the Personal Edition to students. hop-frog 07-20-2004, 06:26 PM Originally posted by Parcival No, you can't get a SuSE Personal Edition with students' discount. Even at the student rate, Professional Edition costs twice as much as the Personal Edition. Sorry, hop-frog, I figured the $59.95 is also the price you guys have to pay for the Personal Edition (because the price is close to what we pay in Switzerland for a Personal/Student Edition but it seems like that's only the system overhere). timothykaine 07-20-2004, 08:23 PM Right now you can get Personal for free: http://www.suse.com/us/private/download/ftp/personal_iso_int.html Or a student/teacher discount on Pro to bring the price to $59.95 if you meet the following requirements: http://www.suse.com/us/company/edu/eligible_individuals_institutions.html hard candy 07-20-2004, 08:27 PM Linux Central (http://www.linuxcentral.com/catalog/index.php3?prod_code=L000-252&id=C1CwUAAJGAvCy) has the 9.1 Personal cdrom for $2.95 (plus $2.95 First Class mail and they have international shipping as well). It's the "installable personal edition cd", which means it is basically what you can download off the web thread_killer 07-20-2004, 08:41 PM Hmmm.... I don't know if the 9.1 Personal edition is the same as the 700mb .iso you can download, but if it is, it's crap. (In my humble opinion of course). I much prefer my 9.0 professional to the 9.1 cd I got from Novell. There isn't even a compiler on it! Yeah, the desktop is pretty (In fact, I upgraded KDE on my 9.0 box today because I like some of the features) but it's a very neutered distro. I loaded it on my laptop and my work machine and quickly went back to 9.0 on both. I'm considering whether the changes are enough to go through an entire upgrade. (9.0 pro to 9.1 pro) Most of them seem to be KDE related. I can live without eye-candy. I can't live without a compilier. My two cents. paj12 07-20-2004, 10:18 PM The Personal edition you can buy in the box is NOT the same as the downloaded ISO. The ISO is really stripped down and doesn't come with a lot of software. It is like the LiveCD, to give you a taste of Linux. If you want the whole 9 yards and have enough bandwidth, do an FTP install of the Pro edition. This is the best way to go, in my opinion. endoalpha 07-20-2004, 11:13 PM I have successfully installed the downloadable SUSE 9.1 personal, and after install I set up yast to the ftp site for further installs, thus giving me the full blown SUSE 9.1. justlinux.com
