The real problem is i'm not gona spend much time under linux if i can't use msn, play music or generally access my mac files (the vids, txt music etc) so i'll never really learn to use it.. hence why i want help with

Hi,
First you didn't provide a lot of information about your setup which would have helped us help you. What distro are you using? What version of gaim are you running? Did you try installing the latest version? What kind of hdd are you trying to access? (Windows, Mac etc)
Linux is a lot different than Windows and Mac's. There is a steep learning curve associated with it and you need to accept that now or you will loose a lot of hair when stuff doesn't work the way you want it to.
Now for the solutions:
For accessing other hard disks follow the instructions here: http://linux.org.mt/article/winmount
For accessing msn try amsn (http://amsn.sourceforge.net/)
Hope this helps.

It's a good idea to add your system and distro to your sig if you'll be asking a lot of questions, gives some background to your questions.
http://www.faqs.org/docs/lnag/lnag_drives.html is a good site for you.
Here is the home page of the site:

And this howto is from the Yellowdog site:
Building a custom kernel (http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/solutions/ydl_general/kernels.shtml)
They had a lot of other howto's listed as well.

Also, FYI, Gaim was having trouble connecting to MSN and Yahoo for the longest time. So, it may be fixed in a newer version.
