Hi
I want to get a new lap top and install linux MDK10 on it
Can somebody recommend a suitable model /manufacturer where everything will be recognised without too much hassle
pcmcia modem or network cards etc etc.
Thanks

Good place for what laptops people have running with Linux
I have a Dell 600m and the only thing I have not had working is the modem, but that is from not trying ;)
I've seen many people with Dell laptops using Linux happily
I've also seen many ThinkPads that work well

sorry I missed that forum
Yeah thats what I am worried about especially the modem cant live with out that and I will probably have to use the network card for an ADSL connection also
Thanks for that link
great one!!:)

The Mobile forum is easy to miss, don't worry about it :)
I've seen other Dell 600m users getting the modem to function using the drivers from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/resources.html
Of course, every laptop will be different so you will need to research them before you buy
http://www.emperorlinux.com/ sells laptops with Linux pre-loaded, but I find them to be a bit pricey

that looks nice also
I dont know about the Emporor linux - fedora based
system
do you know anybody who has bought a lap top from them ??
the other thing is that im in france so it would be complicated if there is a problem with the pc..
Im thinking more of installing mdk10 as i know it a bit better then the rest and it is quite user freiendly
that other site
http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/
has probably enough info on it for me
Ill just have to check it out thanks for your help

Which means if the "built in" hardware cannot be used, you have the option of buying and installing a compatible mini-PCI or PCMCIA card.
A good source of used laptops (I've had mine for about 4 months now) is:

I do not know about the import duty, but those prices are pretty darn good if you're converting from Euros !
