Kernel compilation (modules) ...

Hello ,

I tried to compile kernel again, and again got the same problem ... my modules don't want to compile ... I do :
make config
make dep
make bzImage
make modules (takes like 5 seconds)
make modules_install (takes like 3 seconds)

everything works without errors, but in /lib/modules/<kernel> there are only few modules ...

what can be the problem ?

hihihi... I hope you are axpecting some modules right?

You don't configure modules, you don't get modules.

When I compile, I get 5 secs for this procedure as well, but I only compile one module(the tv card's).
IF you had set on the config to run modules and you didn't get them make sure.

1. You are root.

2. You nuke all and untar/config again.

3. You check another kernel version.

AND Stop using make config,

there is make menuconfg and make xconfig for god's sake! ;)

well , I used xconfig :) not config ... just mistyped :)

yes, I should have modules for at least sound, net, ata controller and some others

checked another version, absolutely the same thing ...


and didn't really understand about number 2 ... ?

Hmmm... seems like a compiler problem. If you can reinstall gcc do it.

And....... you have added 'module support' into the xconfig don't you :)

yes, I don't know about xconfig, but i did added that option when did it via menuconfig :)

before I tried with older compiler, and it did the same thing :(


actually I was playing around with it, and at some moment it started to compile all modules (that's how it seemed to me, b/c it bailed out with error on module AIRNet, which I sure never selected) ... but it never compiled again :( even all modules ...

Oh oh... have you done make clean?

Which kernel version are you compiling? It could be that a few of the modules are compiled before one fails and thus prevents the remaining modules from completing compilation.

Are you using the previous kernel's config/defconfig as input to make xconfig?

Also have a look at /lib/modules/&lt;kernel version&gt;/kernel/drivers or /fs to see which modules were actually completed and whereabouts it may have failed.

Fate: yes, I did do make clean

Logon:I'm compiling 2.4.16. it doesn't seem like any modules fail to compile, b/c I didn't see any errors there .

in /lib/modules/&lt;kernel&gt;/kernel
there's even no directory "drivers" :(

update: ... I tried to load old configuration which I saved from somewhere from old config, then I re-configured everything (b/c 99% of the things were not configured properly) , made a back-up of a new config, and saved it, then when I did 'make bzImage' it bailed out with errors:
like "undefined reference to 'pci_proc_attach_bus'"
(there were also detach_bus , attach_device,detach_device)


as I understand these are probably options from old kernel 2.4.3, so how do I get rid of these ? (I looked into .config and didn't find anything :( )


but I tried 'make modules' anyway and it compiled modules without any errors , and 'make modules_install' actually did something :)

and now there is also dirvers in above directory , like they should be :)

so, now , I need to somehow compile bzImage :)

You can use the config file from the previous or default kernel, load that in make xconfig and then go through all the selections and disable/enable what you need and don't need.

If you know your hardware well, then you will end up with a kernel compiled specifically for your system.

This is mine for the 2.4.16 kernel using ReiserFS. Kernel size is 664.8 KB.

What I found with a Google search seems to indicate PROCFS, which would be ???

CONFIG_PROC_FS=y

under File Systems.

What is yours set as?

Actually it could be any number of things causing this problem.

Maybe what you have selected in make xconfig or the versions of your compiler or others.

Do a Google search for the error messages or parts of and see what you come up with.

What distro and version? Did you verify that all the requirements have been met to be able to compile the latest kernel?

www.kernel.org (http://www.kernel.org) should tell you what is required.

I always update modutils to whatever the latest version is.

Since my distro is rpm based, I get the modutils src.rpm, rebuild and then upgrade.

rpm --rebuild modutils-2.4.10-2.src.rpm

And then install the resulting binary rpm (which will be in /usr/src/&lt;your distro&gt;/RPMS/i386 using

rpm -Uvh modutils-2.4.10-2.i386.rpm

Just verify that you have all the minimum requirements and also check at the Mandrake support site or usergroups to see if others have had similar problems with Mandrake 8.0 and the latest kernel.
