Good luck. "Proven" information is going to be hard to come by, as you can download/copy linux pretty much as needed, without paying anyone. Also, people aren't really eager to tell their bosses that they've had a linux server/workstation running at work for a couple years without the boss noticing.

So, hard data is unlikely. That said, recent news should be enough to fill a hundred pages for your teacher. Bugs, viruses, widely reported failures (navy ship, bill gates presentations, etc.) are only a few of the reasons. The economic impacts of failures, the costs associated with MS's new XP line (monthly payments to use your own computer), development issues (what young developer wants to work with a system that costs him/her hundreds of dollars just to write simple programs, and still keeps them from seeing how things really run? What experienced developer wants to risk MS "eating" their program and profits by tossing a lookalike/blatent copy into windows?) should keep you occupied for some time, with lots of information to report. Most of this info is available from major new services, and commented in other magazines and books too.

Just focusing on the development side alone is a great story. At least for my imagination. Anyways, good luck! :)

Nothing at Microsoft? That's odd.

You may find articles at linuxgazette.com, linuxjournal.com, linuxcentral.com, linuxplanet.com, linuxresources.com etc.
