xfree86 not refreshing, leaving dots and fuzz

If I move my cursor over the desktop on my pcg-c1vn it leaves little offcolor dots and it's only corrected if I open a window and run it over that spot. That makes me think its a refresh rate problem but I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem on another computer (not necesarily a sony picturebook) and if they had found a solution as it is quite anoying.
