FTP help

I get this problem...

If i type this on my server
I get this.

telnet 192.168.1.119 21
blah blah blah connection

telnet localhost 21
connection refused...


any ideas?

Im using pure-ftpd.
I cannot connect from my xp machine it simply says connection refused. The above is from my linux machine.

How are they configured (both the xp and linux boxes)? IPs.. etc.

errm, why is localhost down? did you set too high a setting for your firewall or what?

BTW, maybe you cannot use FTP as default becos SFTP in OpenSSH is more secure.

If you have a firewall running, check your logs if it doesn't block port 21. You can also try a port scanner like nmap. And is the ftp service running?

You can also do "ftp 192.168.1.119 21" (on Windows too), and be sure you can ping your pc's.

well the only firewall is my router. I can send mail i can host my website I used to be able to use ftp, but then all of the sudden it like crapped out. It would do this sometimes but only for like 30 mins, but now its not even fixing itself.

No firewall or anythin, so im like.. wtf is going on?

What things did you do right before it stopped working properly? And check (maybe post) your logs please if you haven't already. And is port 21 open when you can't connect?

i dont think i have any logs regarding ftp.
It just stopped working randomly.
It did this sometimes but usually fixed itself.

If I were you I would setup logging, and pay attention to when the ftp server goes down and what I did right before that. I also would change the password to forecome someone can control the server, and I would use sftp. The password shouldn't be easlily guessable in case you don't know, like dictonary passwords and names etc. The best passwords have about eight diferent characters like for example H,8/6R`j and dG^bj#^r
