After I start Xwindow but before GNOME loads I get the following message:

Could not look up internet address for dhcppc3. This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct the problem by adding dhcpp3 to the file /etc/hosts.

After that GNOME loads and it seems to work fine.

A friend said it might have to do with the DHCP client, but he didn't really know what to do about it.

What does this message mean and how can I fix it?

FYI, I use Red Hat 7.2

Thanks

it is your internet connection, actually the server that you get your ip from (hence DHCP) you could try doing this in a prompt

ping dhcpp3.<your domain>.<com,edu or net>

ex. mine would be

ping ponyexpress.wpunj.edu

which is the mail server
you should see a replay back

I've seen that error, or something very similar, come up once before (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=f7c2b9349fd260adb82adf836343505c&threadid=7228&highlight=abiding).
