i have laggy sound in quake 3. the sound effects come up to 1 second too late, but the time differs, sometimes they come without delay. when there should come several sounds consecutively, they often come all at once, so the earliest sound has the biggest delay. some sounds come twice. it's similar to internet gaming, when you have a lag and after some time, when there is data transfer again, you get all the missing data of that time at once. but here it's only the sound, graphics and gameplay are perfect.
this is NOT that similar sound problem where every sound effect comes with the same delay of about half a second. i also had that problem twice (on two computers) in win98, but that's something different.
i have suse linux 9.1 professional (i'm new to linux, got it about two weeks ago). sound card is terratec 128i pci.
i already tried the control center options (enabling/disabling realtime priority, increasing/decreasing sound buffer, 16/8 bit sound, changing audio device, custom sampling rate) and q3a configuration commands (like s_khz, s_mixahead, s_doppler, com_soundmegs, sndbits, etc). i've also turned off esd (with 'esdctl off'). everything without effect, aside from having no sound at all in some cases.
i also have a different sound problem in unreal tournament (g.o.t.y. edition). it seems like a stereo fault. sounds come at the right time, but not in the right place. every sound effect comes only on the right OR left speaker channel. most weapon sounds (enemies shooting, explosions and stuff) come on the right one, player sounds (like dying enemies) always on the left one. and as loud as if they would stand right next to me, no matter how far away they are.
the programs and games included in suse 9.1 have faultless sound, the same goes for the ut2004 demo that i downloaded. i also downloaded the Q1 remake "tenebrae" and the sound works. in win98 i also have fine sound, including q3a and ut.
can someone help me? if i get q3a to run correctly, i won't need windows anymore :)
