After hearing about all the fuss over Linux I had to try it. Im not that computer savy but Id like that to change. Im fairly creative and always curious so I figure Linux woudld be more satisfying than windows. But I havent been able to install it yet. I even did a week of research but I stuck...
Im trying to partition my hd. I've got 20 GB and have only used about 5GB so... When using FIPS I get this

Error: Unknown file system: 44h
Only DOS partitions can be split (system indicator must be 4 or 6)
Bye!

Im running Windows 98 2nd ed.
Trying to install RH v 7.0
The floppy disk was created by typing:

format a:/s

I then added the files Restorbb.exe, Fips.exe, and Errors.txt. When I opened the floppy I also saw the file Command.exe (I believe this came from my format command above).

Anyone have suggestions...? What in the heck am I doing wrong?!

what exactly do u have for the install?

do u have the CDS, or just a floopy and an internet connection (network, dsl, cable only)?
RH is up to 7.2 and from my experiences it is well worth the trouble to use that verison though 7.0 is nice, 7.2 has the fixes that 7.0 has.
if u have the cds all u need to do is place the first cd into your cdrom and reboot, your computer should be able to pick up the cd and boot from it. then just follow the install from there. Check out the NHF section (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/installation/index.html) on the install process and the file partitioning. U will need to repartition your hard drive to allow for space that linux will take up. u can use partition magic for that. or use a second HDD.

I have the RH v 7.0. I bought the CDs with a book called RH Linux Bible by C. Negus. Ill up grade to 7.2 as soon as I get comfortable with Linux.

Partion magic is about $70 for v6. v7.x is around 139.00. Im not going to buy either of those. I might as well get a new hd for 80$ at Bestbuy. Im trying to save money if possible.

My problem is im trying to reclaim disk space from existing partions. The dos partition. I need to know how to get around the error(see my original post). What adjustments to make...

Thanks anyway!

Does the following sound familiar:
http://www.powerquest.com/support/primus/id311.html? This would affect fips as well.

If fips gives you a hard time, you can also try Ranish Partition Manager (http://www.ranish.com) (it's free also).

Thanks DMR about the Partion Magic FAQ. It actually helped. I had to disable GoBack for my hd to be read properly.

However once past that stage I get the following error:

Since the new partition is created at the end of the old one and contains at least one ylinder, the partition can not be split if not at least the very last cylinder is completly free. Probably there is a hidden file like 'image.ide' or 'mirorsav.fil' in the last cylinder.
Bye!

I searched for these files and I cant seem to locate them!
The Partition Magic lists this as Error 108 but they dont list a cure. They only tell you what's wrong!
Anyone else get hung up, on this part of reclaiming disk space?

You need to do a complete scandisk and defrag in windows before starting to resize, create new, or move partitions.

I did. Ill try again though. Is this because programs in config.sys and autoexec.bat are writing to my hd when I shut down in dos/windows?

The book (RH v7.0 Linux Bible by C. Negus) says "Before you reboot to the FIPS disk, you want to make sure that nothing is written to the hard disk when DOS/Windows shuts down. Look for programs in config.sys and autoexec.bat that write to disk."

I tried to find these programs using find folders app. but they didn't show up. How else could I find them? And then once I do, what do I do to them to prevent them from writing to my disk? Thanks!
