compiling svgalib-1.9.18 causes access violation

As I do one of my routine "emerge world" in Gentoo I run into trouble compiling the package for svgalib-1.9.18 as it causes a nasty access violation. How do I need to solve this? I googled for the rror, but it doesn't look like my problem is related to bug #53211, does it? Could it be because I had to patch my kernel to resolve the problem with this kernel's version and my nvidia card?

Okay, I got it to work with
USE=build emerge svgalib

No clue why that worked, though.
