Is there a way to query uninstalled packages for provide lists and info? I'm trying to see what a package provides and where its files go before I install it and I don't seem to be able to.

In SUSE distros, there's something called KRPMview which allows you to see all the info you're looking for. You didn't say what distro you're using, so I don't know if this helps.

Also, I like the rpmdrake tool since you can add online sources with it and install rpms right over the internet. Is there a backend to this? Can I setup online sources with a console tool?

oh i see the urpm programs are responsible for online sources. I'm using mdk 9.1.
