i have mandrake 8.1 and i didnt have to do any kind of sndconfig to make it work. and quake 3 sounded pretty decent from what i remember. so my question is, will it be any better if i install the drivers for my sblive value???

this question applies with redhat 7.1 as well

This should help you out: http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/soundcards/sblive.html

I've got a SB 64 in my Linux box that needs setting up but I haven't got around to it yet.

As far as I know, you probably have the sblive driver running in Mandrake 8.1. I had 8.0 for a while and it automatically detected and installed the emu10k1 driver. Installing another version of that driver would probably not make any sound difference.
