I'm having some problems with Gnome. A colleague, who shares ownership of my linux workstation (running RedHat Enterprise Linux 3, kernel 2.4.21-15.0.2.ELsmp) recently as root killed by gnome session. This has corrupted something in my gnome settings, since now whenever I log in I the screen turns black and numerous windows appear filled with dashes and other strange characters. I can't even log out! However, other users on the machine can run gnome with no problems whatsoever and I have been able to run KDE, so I know that it is not a system-wide problem but rather just associated with my account.

Can anyone suggest what files might have been corrupted by my colleague's kill command? There are several gnome-related files/directories in my home, like .gnome, .gnome2, and .gnome-desktop, but it is not clear to me which files in these might need to be replaced, or even how to replace the files. I would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks,
Mike Poland

my only suggestion would be to delete the gnome stuff out of your folder and log back in. This should rebulid gnome with the default stuff--i think in /etc/shell
