NIS: ypbindproc_domain: domain not bound

Running Redhat 7.0

I attempting to configure an NIS server on my home box and am having difficulty understanding where exactly I have made an error in the configuration (I keep getting th same error: ypbindproc_domain: domain not bound). I have searched several different databases looking for help with this seemingly easy task but have been unable to find help with this particular issue. Below is listing of information about the box. Hope this helps.

-Running DNS on box

-set ypdomainname to a netbios name that is NOT the same as dns domainname

-portmapper is running & reports OK
-ypserv is running & reports OK
-ypserv.conf file is configured with host ip address

-securenets file is configured with localhost ip address and w/ loopback address

-I can ping by netbios name, fqdn, & ip but when I run ypbind in debug it is unable to ping "hostname" and it also trys "NIS domainname"

-/var/yp/Makefile ypserver option is configured w/ netbios name of NIS box --but have also tried ip address --neither option works

-ypinit -m reports: error in Makefile: run by hand (how do I do this, by hand?) but at end of file it states ypserv.conf file is ok

-/var/log/messages reports ypserv refused connect from local ipaddress to procedure ypproc_null (I have no idea what this means)

-also when I run command: rpcinfo -u "hostname" ypserv it reports rpc timed out: program 100004 version 1 & 2 are not available.

Any assistance with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Here's something I found that may be causing my problem -- I can not run "make". Although I had the /var/yp/Makefile I can not run make after adjusting the file. I had to install the rpm package from cd-rom. Now when I attempt to run: make passwd shadow group I get the following error: nullMakefile:91: *** missing separator. Stop.

Error gives the look and feel of a configuration error in Makefile. After carefully rescanning the file I do not see any errors. Does anyone have some suggestions on how to fix this error?

This posting may seem odd -- but -- I figure if I am the only one replying to my own question, then atleast I am thinking out loud and maybe the information I post here will help someone else down the road.

I believe I am closer to answering my own question. The problem appears to be related to my /etc/yp.conf file. I am not sure what information should be listed in this file "exactly". If I look in the /etc/hosts file and match the yp.conf file with this information I do not get any closer to fixing the binding problem? Why? I have even tried my ip address & fqdn where the hostname should be? Nothing works...I'll keep tredging along til something works.

If anyone reads this and has some ideas - I am all eyes & ears, so to speak.
