Serious problems with Maxtor Onetouch 80 GB

I am in Mandrake 10.0, download version. I have a Maxtor Onetouch 80 GB external USB 2.0 hard drive that refuses to be recognized. Whenever Mandrake tries to recognize it, it hangs. The file system is NTFS (straight from Windows XP), if that matters at all.

Are the correct modules being loaded and is hotplugging enabled?

You need usb-storage and ehci-hcd (for USB 2.0) plus their supporting modules.
