What exactly is Mandrake Cooker? At first, I thought it was Mandrake, just with all the newest packages and things like that. However, now I'm wondering whether or not this is a tool that can be used to upgrade your computer to the latest packages. Am I right? Wrong?

You're right and wrong. While all you should have to do is point your updater to a cooker download site, you might not want to. Yes, cooker contains a lot of the newer software for mandrake, but at the same time, this software isn't completely tested with mandrake, and may cause problems.

For most people with a good understanding of how linux and related programs interact, this is usually not a problem, as you'll probably be able to figure out how to back out of the upgrade, or fix any problem. For most people, however, this isn't always so easy, and you can get hung up on a problem that might just be a configuration detail buried in some obscure file on your computer. And, of course, there is always the chance that you can toast your distro, filesystem, partitions, et al., generally considered a bad thing...

So, depending on how willing you are to accept such problems (mandrake won't support problems like this), cooker can be useful, or it can be a real pain. Using it sparingly (upgrading non-essential programs) is probably the best option for most people.

:D  Very very glad I asked before I tried it out. Guess I'll wait to upgrade ProFTPd.
