I'm running Mandrake 10. For a number of reasons, I think it's time for me to upgrade this kernel to something newer. How difficult is this going to be in Mandrake?? Are there any steps that I need to take in addition to the steps in these help files??

I've managed to upgrade to the 2.6.6 kernel in 10.0 with relatively little difficulty. There were some kernel configuration options that I had to tweak to get everything working, and there are still a few rough edges on my custom kernel, but overall it was pretty painless. It was my first successful kernel compile too.

Yes one more into a live volcanoe. It would be preferable to any compiling when a nice nap after that pizza and beer could be had.:D

but how would it compare with self-dentistry???

I just thought it was time to step up and compile my own kernel.... the big issue I'm trying to resolve is this slow DNS resolution problem. I've heard that the newer kernels have this problems fixed, and wanted to see for myself. If it doesn't work, I'm blaming hard candy.

I wanted to find out if it was going to be an easy thing to do or if it was going to cause me many sleepless nights and irritable days...

Do you have a post about your problem? (DNS)

no, but there are a couple of threads that deal with my problem that I'm watching...

and this is the thread that inspired me to get a new kernel... like I say, if I do this and it doesn't work, I'm blaming hard candy... :D

maybe this is just a mozilla problem.... I just installed opera and the DNS resolution seems just fine... maybe I should go and upgrade mozilla.... on the other hand opera does look pretty smooth...

nevermind... apparently I typed one of the lines in my /etc/modprobe.conf incorrectly... tried it again, and now my DNS resolution is fixed.... so I guess I'll hold off on compiling my own kernel....

don't hold off!

compiling your own kernel is something worthwhile. why have all those extra modules and features compiled into the kernel if they won't get used? it only takes about 15 minutes or so and it's really easy. the 2.6 series has two nice x-config options with (it seems) updated help descriptions. plus it's one of the really cool features of linux that we have this freedom to finetune our kernels.

it's worth a shot at least.
