apt-get question

When i apt-get install <program> it says "need to fetch 12.8Mb of archives after which 2.56 will be installed.

My question is , how much am i actually downloading (12.8Mb or 2.56Mb)

BTW: the reason i ask is because i'm on a dowload limit and use a 56k modem.

You'll download 12.8 mb, and after install, it will take up 2.56 mb more than the system takes up now. Apparently a number of libraries will be upgraded in the process, since downloading so much to gain so little in space is infrequent.
