I have an old hp laptop running fedora core 2 with a pcmia orinoco wireless card. With core 1, it recognized and activated, could access the router, but not get online. With core 2, it recognizes, but won't allow me to activate it?
any help? sorry if this is vague

I had problems with mine as well... make sure it's not recognized as an ethernet connection instead of as a wireless... I had to delete mine and then readd it. Also, if it recognized you may have to promote pcmcia to start before network in rc5.d

Hi!
What do you get when you try to activate the card? How does Fedora recognizes it?
I had problems with an orinoco pci card, the thread on that subject is here (http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=127964&highlight=wireless)

i have the same problem ""Trying to determine IP address for Eth1:" and after a while it says "Cannot activate device Eth1" "
but i never wrote an encryption key. could it be a firewall issue? I just set the firewall to default in installation. i will go run the stuff they talk about in the thread.

Open up the network configuration gui and choose configure... enter your root password. Check the tab marked hardware and make sure eth1 says "orinoco_cs wireless eth1" and not ethernet. If it says ethernet you will have to delete the device (you may have to delete the hardware as well but I think just deleting the device should do it) and run the internet config wizard to add a wireless connection.

yep thats the problem.
how do i run the internet config wizard without being able to get online? i tried re-adding it but selecting it as a wireless device, except the list of devices does not contain orinoco_cs in it. Could i download the driver, burn it, and install it via cd or something?

try this...
# (command line)
#su -
#password
#/sbin/modprobe orinoco_cs
#service pcmcia restart
Then run the configuration wizard (and no, you don't need to be connected to the internet to run it) post the results...

i did
/sbin/modprobe orinoco_cs
and
#
occured.
then i did the next command and it said
stopping pcmcia
starting...
no sockets found
orinoco_cs wasn't in the list thereafter

Ok, there is an issue with your pcmcia... I had this problem as well... I had to load the kernel module for my pcmcia... not sure how to find it out... mine was yenta_socket
#modprobe yenta_socket
#modprobe orinoco_cs
#service pcmcia restart
Someone else may have to step in and tell you how to locate what module your pcmcia socket uses... unless you know this... What model laptop are you using?

try #/sbin/dmesg and look for lines similar to these:
Linux Kernel Card Services
options: [pci] [cardbus] [pm]
PCI: Enabling device 0000:02:01.0 (0000 -> 0002)
Yenta: CardBus bridge found at 0000:02:01.0 [1028:013e]
Yenta: ISA IRQ mask 0x0478, PCI irq 11
Socket status: 30000011
Post your lines (if you find them)...
