So I'm running SuSE 8.1 and I recently had to swap out my previous network card, which worked fine, for a gigabit card taken from a friends computer. I have not however be able to get it to work at all. I know the hardware is installed correctly as it functions fine when I boot into windows (its a dual boot box).

The card is a Broadcom gigabit card. I downloaded and compiled the bcm5700 driver for the card but everytime I try to use insmod with the newly built module my computer freezes and I have to reboot. The YAST configuration tool is not working in this case either.

Any help or further steps I can take would be great.

I would check around for a Suse rpm to use, the compiled driver is probably conflicting with some Suse custom configuration.
