I need to remove a hard drive (hdb). It is only used for back up now.

If i remove this drive and powerup I get a prompt saying to do cntrl-d for normal startup or enter root password for utilities. normal boot didn't work (I forgot to write down the error)

what should i do? I'm a newbie. BTW- I run mail and web server from the box too.

I would say that you need to enter the root password, edit /etc/fstab so as to remove any lines that refer to partitions on hdb, then reboot.
That should work as long as there are no essential file systems on hdb (you say in yuor post it's used for backups)
