I'm downloading solaris 8.01 from the sun site. Looks good, i've got jdk1.3 for solaris.

Is Solaris as good as linux? Solaris doesn't seem to have a lot of software available...

Well, most of the software available for linux (well, a good part, anyways) will compile and run on Solaris. I have tried Solaris and have liked it somewhat, although to me Linux is much more user friendly and fun. Part of the problem is also my PC, which is a Cheapo clone made up of crappy components that Solaris doesnīt seem to like (X in 2 colors at 640x480 sucks).
Anyways, Solaris is a well established OS in the commercial world, and you should use it and learn as much as you can if you plan on working in the area; if you just want to have fun, then heck, go for it, but you will realise sometime along the road that linux is a lot more fun :-)

BTW if you use any of the BSDīs you might find some resemblances... Solaris started as a sort of spinoff of BSD.

Actually just finished downloading and burning the CD's today. Trying to decide which PC to install it on or I might wait until I build my new AMD in a month or so.

Solaris on Intel PC is crap... Get cheap Sun system, if it ever exist  , and run off it. Sun Sparc 10 can be obtain for less than $ 250.00.
