Every time i dial up with kppp i manage to get connected for 30 secs or so before an error appears - "PPP Daemon died (PPP Negotiation Failed)" - I've tried various solutions from knowledgebases but they all don't seem to work....

I'm using Caldera openLinux 2.4 and using a US Robotics modem.....

I'd really appreciate any help, so i don't have to reboot and use windows to ask more questions about linux :p

thanks

You can try this from Caldera's knowledgebase.

Description:

I am using eDesktop 2.4 with the ksaferppp utility to connect to the internet. When my modem dials, it connects temporarily and then the error "pppd daemon died unexpectedly" pops up. How do I fix this so my modem will dial and make a connection to the internet?

Solution:

1) check the /etc/ppp/options file to be certain the pppd daemon is not attempting to lock the modem (ksaferppp already has)
2) increase the timeout in the /etc/ppp/starter/chats/unix-login file to 60 or 120
3) check the ppp HOWTO included with eDesktop (the documentation button on the K panel)

If that doesn't help, then try searching here http://support.calderasystems.com/caldera for other solutions. I've found their knowledgebase to be very helpful.

There's also a 'Getting Started with PPP (http://support.calderasystems.com/caldera?solution&11-990308-0008&130-920928608&14-10&15-0&25-&3-&30-) guide.

I know this !

You are entering an incorrect login name AND/OR password.
Ring up your ISP and confirm it.

One of my friend had the same problem, silly really :)

And another one...

Description:

I just installed Edesktop 2.4 on my system. I connect to my ISP but after about 20 seconds I get a message that says PPPD died unexpectedly.

Solution:

Some ISP's do not support X2 56K modems. If your ISP does not support this then you can try disabling the X2 when the modem initializes by adding a parameter to the initialization string.

Go into the "K" on the Kpanel under "Settings, COAS, Peripherals, Modem. On the "initstring" line add the following:

s32=98

Try connecting again to your ISP.
