hello all.

I have setup a Red Hat 9 server and am in the process of getting samba up and running form my windows machines.

I have created the samba share and have created user accounts and passwords for both samba and linux.

my share is located in the directory /store.

My problem is: from my windows machine (winxp) I can see the samba server in "my network places" but when I click on it to open, I get an access denied error message.

I am able to get to the web from the linux box, so I believe the networking side is working. I also have the firewall disabled in linux, seeing how I am using a dsl router for internet.

From what I can tell and have read, I believe my samba setup is correct. Where I think I am having the problem is on the linux side. I beleve I have to share the directory or change the users rights to the directory in linux in order for samba then to be able to allow windows users to use it, the problem is, I do not know how to create a linux share or change the user rights to the directory....

Can anyone point me in the correct direction? I am at work now, but if more information is needed, I can provide it when I get home and have access to the linux box...

never mind.... must have been me, I got home here to post the exact error message I was getting, and what do you know. I am able to access the share and write files to it.

I do get the following error in linux: When in the file manager (in xwindows) in super user mode, on the local net sharing tab, the following error is shown "error running 'filesharelist'. Check if installed and in $path or /usr/sbin."

Does anyone know how to fix this "filesharelist"??

Thanks...

Next time please include a subject with a bit more info as to the question you are posting. Just posting 'Samba' does not tell us much and also some of our members are on dialup accounts which then wastes their precious bandwidth. I've manually edited the subject.

Thank-you for understanding.

If you want a good howto that should make installing samba pretty much brainless, use my howto that I wrote on my website which is linked in my signature. Perhaps you'll read something on there that you didn't do yet. It sounds to me like it's just not authenticating and you need to set some stuff in Windows so that it can do that.
