Okay, so, in the next week or so, I'm planning on moving over to X.Org from Xfree. It seems most of the major distributions are doing it, and, since I always like having the newest stuff -- well, it sounds like a good idea. ;)

I noticed a bunch of other users here at JustLinux are already running X.Org. I have done my research, I have the Gentoo documentation downloading, but, just in case there is something I should know: are there any pitfalls/traps/tips/tricks/anything that anybody can provide to make the switch easier?

Thank you.

One sepcific question I had - should I install X.Org first and THEN remove XFree from Gentoo, or should I do the reverse. Remove XFree then install X.Org?

When you emerge X.org after unmasking some apps, it shows XFree as blocking - so it automatically unmerges it. I'm not sure whether it does that before or after the emerging - but that's probably the way to go :)
I don't think you need any tips'n'tricks - it's really easy. You can even just keep your XF86Config, though if you want you can run "xorgconfig" to reconfigure.
It really isn't that big a deal ;)

I haven't had any problems whatsoever (using slackware-current) in switching to X.org.

The only real problem I had was finally realising after the 10000th time of typing 'startx' that the configuration file I was meant to modify was xorg.conf and not XF86Config! LOL.

Uninstalling XFREE86 is the best option I think, for with Slackware at least, both packages share the same paths for the files that are installed (not to mention that most files are the same, are they not?)

Although I haven't actually done it myself, I have read the gentoo instructions and read others comments. From what I gather, if you follow the instructions, it's quite painless and foolproof.

Okay, thanks for the replies. Uranus -- you were the person I was thinking of specifically as having installed X.Org.

I think I will follow Pafnoutios's suggestion and follow the installation to a T...should do the trick for me. (Haha...I can always emerge lynx and head back to this board if a I really have problems. :p

Thanks

You may have to go in and change all the font paths if you continue to use your XF86Config.
