I just got my own computer with nice big 45gb IBM 7200rpm ATA100 HDD. It currently has Win ME as OS with an ASUS A7V133 motherboard.

I got it all working sweetly in Windows and thought i should install linux. I tried Mandrake 7.2 and Redhat 7, neither could find a hard drive. I also tried SuSE 7 which could find hard drives.. 3 of them infact!!!

I talked to some of my friends and they explained what the problem was and suggested that i get the drivers of the ASUS webpage/CD and stick them on a floppy and use it as a driver disk.....Tried this...didn't work....

I have read through the How-to on Ultra-33 and 66 and i feel even more confused now....

Is there any esay way for a newbie to fix this, other than moving the HDD to a spare EIDE slot on my motherboard?

Plz help!!!

Some newer distros support the ATA66/100 right out of the box while with others you will have to follow the workaround procedures.

There is a NHF here on Ultra66 which will also work for the 100.

Follow this NHF http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/hardware/udma66.html as it also works for the ata100.

Ignore the part on patching and recompiling the kernel as it's really not needed.

It's not that hard to follow.

I followed the Ultra66 procedure here (http://linux.nf/stepbystep.htm) that worked for my Promise ATA100. All works fine now.
