I noticed that my monitor wasn't actually powering off when it was idle like I had told it to in xscreensaver. This was really annoying and it really made my monitor stay hot all the time. I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't go off since I had told it to. Well, I am using the Nvidia drivers and thought it may have something to do with that. So, I looked on their site and found nothing useful. Did some more looking around and found that you need to put Option "DPMS"in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file under the "Devices" section (you know, where it tells how much video ram you have).

I know of another person or two who have had trouble with this. Hope it helps someone else. You'd be amazed how a monitor left on can heat up even a decent-sized room

BTW, you also need to have ACPI or APM in your kernel if I'm not mistaken. Makes sense.
